BUILDING SOLID RESEARCH SKILLS: THE GENEALOGICAL PROOF STANDARD
With Guest Speakers:
Michael Hait, CG(SM)
"What is a 'Reasonably Exhaustive Search'?"
The first step of the Genealogical Proof Standard is to "complete a reasonably exhaustive search for all relevant records" related to your research objective. This presentation discusses what a "reasonably exhaustive search" constitutes, why this is necessary, and how to conduct a search. A case study explores how failing to identify all relevant records can lead to missing information and forming inaccurate conclusions about your ancestors' lives.
Elissa Scalise Powell, CG(SM), CGL(SM)
“Patriot or Not?: Using the Genealogical Proof Standard on a Closed DAR Line”
The DAR closes acceptance on suspect Patriot lines. The lecture points out the perils of jumping to conclusions, incomplete research and not understanding historical context. Work through the solution to four research questions with the speaker and see if you can figure out the answers.
Michael Hait, CG, is a full-time professional genealogical researcher, author, and lecturer. His focus on skillful analysis of original records consistently produces reliable results meeting the Genealogical Proof Standard. Michael currently serves on the faculty of the Institute for Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR), the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, and the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG). Michael has twice won writing awards from the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors, and won first place in the 2011 National Genealogical Society Writing Competition.
Elissa Scalise Powell, Certified Genealogist(SM), Certified Genealogical Lecturer(SM), is a western Pennsylvania researcher and co-director of the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP). She is the President of the Board for Certification of Genealogists; an instructor for the “Genealogy Profession” module of Boston University’s on campus and online Genealogical Research Certificate course; and coordinator of the “Professional Genealogy” course at the Samford University Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research. She is a regional and national speaker on methodology, Pennsylvania records, professional development, and society management.
