Researching the Ship of Your Immigrant Ancestor

Locating information about vessels can be a critical, primary part of your genealogy research -- if, for example, you know the name of a ship that an ancestor served on, but don't know what happened while they were on board -- or it can simply add a nice leaf to the tree -- such as when you want to add an image of the ship an ancestor emigrated on, or served on. Peter McCracken, creator of ShipIndex.org, will talk about the process of immigration, and ways of searching for information about ships, large and small. ShipIndex.org has over 140,000 completely free citations to ships mentioned in important maritime history books and journals, including 40,000 authority records from WorldCat. The subscription database has nearly 2.8 million citations in it from a broader range of sources.
