Butler County’s Nine-Month Men
When: Thursday evening, May 30th, 2013
Where: YWCA, 120 W. Cunningham Street, Butler
Time: 6:30 pm
Join us for the release of this book and a presentation by Bradley Pflugh, educator, Civil War historian, and author. Mr. Pflugh graduated from the Butler Area Senior High School and obtained his master’s degree in history from Slippery Rock University where he studied under David Dixon. He worked in Gettysburg for several years and then came back to the Butler area where he is employed as a history teacher and department chair at Knoch High School in Saxonburg.
Mr. Pflugh will present the only historical accounting of the men of Butler County who enlisted in the 134th and 137th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiments that served nine-month enlistments. While the 134th participated in front line battles, the 137th never engaged in a skirmish. But, both regiments suffered the ravages of war including disease and illness that took many lives.
He also has compiled a roster of the Butler County men who served in these units with personal details such as their height and the color of their eyes and hair. These fascinating Civil War units have, to this date, never been presented with the details and photographs that are presented in this book and program.
